The Ohio State University, Second-Year Design Project, DESIGN 3151 (SP21)
Instructed by: Dr. Sébastien Proulx
Group Project: Karl Ludwig, Princess Egbo, Madyson Webb
Design Challenge: Our team was challenged to do in-depth research, spend time in place, and collaborate to design a concept that fits the overall moods and themes of the location.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
This project was a team-based project that taught the importance of place analysis and the different layers that make up the essence of the space. This project is only a conceptual idea for a Little Free Library to be placed on the stairs of the Richard C. Larkins Plaza.
DESIGN PROCESS
PLACE BIOGRAPHY
The west of the Oval and south of Ohio Stadium was the only open field however, in 1931 Larkins Hall, a large new athletic recreation center was constructed. The Hall was then demolished and the RPAC and Aquatic Center were constructed. The space between these two facilities is dedicated to the Richard C. Larkins Plaza.
INITIAL SKETCHES
CONCEPT LAYERS
These sketches are the finalized concepts pulled from all our initial sketches to integrate into the space. We chose to target the mood and spirit layer strictly because the team felt the space lacked a personality and was highly un-inviting to relax in for long periods of time.

Physical Layer:

Geometric, industrial, glass, metal, concrete.

Mood Layer:

Impersonal, uninviting, intimidating, unpurposeful

Time Layer:

Scattered, disconnectedness, activity hubs, long history of recreational identity.

Spirit Layer:

Ignored, blank canvas, victim of other agendas, path to destination.

CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT
PROPOSAL
A creative outlet blackout poetry-themed LFL. The LFL will have a small time investment that helps engage the fast pace feel of the area and creates a more inviting feel to stay in the area for longer periods of time. In addition, for the aesthetics, we wanted to integrate with space’s geometric, industrial characteristics while adding a bold focal point.
GOAL
To allow our concept to speak for itself and transform the unused space itself into an attraction, much like the RPAC.

FINALIZED CONCEPT
The concept of our LFL was to immerse and encourage creativity into the space through "Creativity and Renewal Through Subtraction".
The boxes are used as the symbol to blacking out or subtraction to the space just the concept in blackout poetry. Students, visitors, and staff are free to with the books as they please like destroy the books, leave a book, or take the page they created from the book. We left the concept open-ended to allow the user to use the space as they would seem fit.
